EAT WELL PLATE

The eat well plate is a graphical demonstration of the relative proportions of the different food groups recommended in a healthy diet. It is a very useful tool originally created by the UK government to guide people in choosing what foods to include and in what proportions in order to achieve a balanced, healthy diet.

This does not have to be implemented in every meal, and it is in fact difficult to do so . One should however strive to achieve a balanced diet every day.

Each of the 5 food groups have their unique nutritional value and should therefore be included in the diet, however, in the right amounts.

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a healthy eating plan:
  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars
  • Stays within your daily calorie needs
Most of the caloric intake should be from starchy foods such as potatoes, rice, bread, cassava; and not from fat.

A healthy diet reduces the risks of many chronic diseases including heart disease.
