This does not have to be implemented in every meal, and it is in fact difficult to do so . One should however strive to achieve a balanced diet every day.
Each of the 5 food groups have their unique nutritional value and should therefore be included in the diet, however, in the right amounts.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a healthy eating plan:
- Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
- Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts
- Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars
- Stays within your daily calorie needs
A healthy diet reduces the risks of many chronic diseases including heart disease.
